Thyme has a deep history as an herb of the dead and those who mourn them, including its fumigation in ancient Greek burial rights and use in ancient Egyptian embalming practices as a way to protect the dead and grant them safe passage into the next place. In more contemporary times, thyme has also been used to adorn the homes of mourners after a death, in turn granting us safe passage and courage to process our grief through our time of bereavement.
The thyme used in this tincture was harvested in ceremony from a space adjacent to a cemetery where I have spent considerable time over the course of 12 years. Prayers and offerings were made in return to the cemetery’s inhabitants as an expression of gratitude. This tincture is potent, and anyone using this medicine is encouraged to call upon their loving dead for their support- and perhaps most importantly, to leave themselves some room and time for whatever feelings may come up during use.
